What to Expect at Your First Glass Art Workshop
Thinking about booking your first glass art workshop but not sure what to expect? You're not alone. Most of our students arrive with a mix of excitement and nerves — and leave wondering why they didn't come sooner.
Here's a friendly, honest guide to what a day at The Butterfly Tree Glass Studio actually looks like.
Before you arrive
You don't need to bring anything special. All materials, tools, and equipment are provided. Just wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty — glass cutting can leave a fine residue, though nothing that won't wash out.
We're based in a beautiful garden studio, so if the weather is nice, you may spend some time outside. Comfortable shoes are a good idea.
When you arrive
You'll be welcomed by Juliet, who has been teaching glass art for many years and has a real gift for putting nervous beginners at ease. There's usually a cup of tea and a chance to look around the studio before the session begins.
Class sizes are kept small deliberately — this isn't a production line. You'll get plenty of individual attention and time to ask questions.
The workshop itself
The session will typically begin with a short introduction to the materials and techniques you'll be using. Juliet will demonstrate each step before you try it yourself.
You'll choose your colours, cut your glass pieces, and arrange them into your design. The pieces then go into the kiln — and the magic happens.
Most workshops run for around three to four hours, though this varies. You'll never feel rushed.
What you'll take home
This is the best bit. At the end of the session, you'll leave with a finished piece of fused glass art that you made yourself. It might be a decorative panel, a piece of jewellery, or a sun catcher.
Many of our students are genuinely surprised by how beautiful their work turns out. First-timers regularly produce pieces they're proud to display at home.
